This course aims to teach some interesting approaches to drawing from reference.
Lessons look at negative space drawing, have written and video methods, along with photo resources you can work from.
These drawing lessons are at the core of Make and Know and are useful for watching before any of our Heritage learning sessions.

Negative Shape DrawingThis lesson looks at how we can break down complicated views and by sketching the outside perimeter instead of trying to draw everything in one go.
The image of the Wyre Surveyor is included, but for a classroom session, you would be best setting up a still life.

A Measured-ish Approach to drawing
When drawing from life a lot of artists measure their subject by stretching out their arm and using the pencil as a measuring device.
In this lesson we do a version for doing the same sort of approach but from a photograph.
This technique is good for breaking down objects and buildings, ignoring perspective and other things that can be a struggle.
This is an introductory course taught by Joseph Travis, who has twenty years of experience working in the arts.
Joseph is also a qualified teacher and undertook a Master's Degree in how we can use online technologies to help teach traditional craft skills.
In 2026, Joseph has been keeping a daily sketchbook for 10 years.
Printer paper is fine for these drawing exercises; there's no need to worry about expensive papers at this stage of learning.
A drawing tool, whether that is a pencil, a pen, it doesn't matter if it's a felt tip pen, just something that will make a mark on your printer paper.
